On May 20 Uninformazione Tor Vergata will officially turn 6 years old. A relatively short period in the life of a person, but extremely wide and intense if you think of the growth of a university student. 6 years, for a University Association, is a very big period, in which many people follow one another, bringing experience, skills and opinions as well as doubts, mistakes and fears.

UIF was born with a very specific purpose: to help students to have a clearer and more conscious vision of what awaits them in the future and of their aptitudes and abilities. Improving the path of our peers means contributing to the improvement and growth of the entire University ecosystem and society. Yes, because for us University is much more than an institution, it is a unique and irreplaceable space for growth and comparison for everyone.

We believe that every student should live these years in the most intense way possible, taking risks and trying to improve what surrounds him; our philosophy is to put ourselves at the service of society to contribute to progress by improving ourselves.

In 6 years of associationism and over 40 initiatives organized we have had the opportunity to grow individually and as a group and to know closely the University of Tor Vergata, analyzing problems, potential and limitations. Based on this, we have developed a broad and detailed electoral program, with which we propose ourselves to the next student elections in May 2021. It is an ambitious, detailed and rational program that we are committed to carry out, as a group and individually, with all of ourselves, although without absolute guarantees that all of this will be realized in the next 2 years.

We are not asking you to vote for us, but to read all that we propose and freely choose whether to support us or not.

EDUCATION | + inclusiveness, + practice, + protections

  1. The pandemic period has forced and led each of us to reorganize our social life and our spaces. What we are asking for today is a greater openness to reopening. Some schools have already begun to work in this direction, while others have lagged, mainly due to problems related to a lack of qualified personnel assigned to the surveillance of common spaces such as classrooms. What we propose is:
  • to present a proposal aimed at the creation of a working table recognized as an “extraordinary” commission that, in addition to involving University executives and qualified personnel, also welcomes student representatives from the various faculties with the aim of informing and communicating the protocols and initiatives in place to the student community.
  1. We need more attention to the needs of the student, both during and after the academic/training path; an attention that must be expressed both in the didactic planning on lessons and exams and in the didactic contents. For this reason, we ask for a more practice-centered didactics, aimed at building a professional freedom for students and preparing him/her in the best way for the introduction in the working context. Below are our proposals.
  • Intensify the number of internships, laboratories, simulations of aptitude problems and practical case studies proposed directly by companies. This proposal is achievable through an extension of the University’s external collaborations with organizations and associations.
  • Intensification of the use of IT tools.
  • Recording and uploading of the lessons also post-covid on the Teams channel of the course, so that the educational contents are usable also by non-attending students.
  • Rationalization of exam dates by increasing the minimum number of days between appeals.
  • Improvement of communication between students and student secretariats through the administration of informative questionnaires that highlight the main problems.

COMMON SERVICES and RIGHT TO STUDY | + efficiency, + collaboration, + innovation

University’s services need to be strengthened and improved at several points to ensure a more efficient and engaging experience for the student community. In this sense we set ourselves the following macro-objectives:

  • map the allocation of funds for a more efficient allocation of existing resources;
  • make concrete proposals for new financial resources.

Our proposals in this broad area of focus are divided below by area.

Secretarial offices

The problem of the secretarial offices has been accentuated during the pandemic period, creating various inconveniences for students, particularly at certain times such as matriculation, payment of taxes, etc.. The problems are mainly related to the lack of staff.

Below are our proposals in this area.

  • Creation of a dedicated Teams channel for secretaries (something that already exists in other universities): Microsoft Teams offers all the tools necessary to manage secretarial activities, including the possibility of implementing a call booking system. This system makes it possible to divide the day into slots in which students can book themselves in with a secretary.
  • Implementation, for both the student secretariat and the teaching secretariat, of an online booking system, connected to the aforementioned Teams channel, to help manage queues.
  • Creation of a FAQ section on the site dedicated to those questions that are frequently asked via email. This section will have to be continually updated by the various heads of the secretariats in order to build an increasingly widespread and detailed information system.
  • The periodic organization, at the central level of the University, of refresher courses for secretarial staff on the use of digital tools useful for the efficiency and enhancement of services.

Placement Office

The initiatives of the Placement Office are essential to connect the University with the world of work and allow students to make informed and oriented choices for their future.

Below are our proposals in this area.

  • Creation of a new Placement Office website that is more dynamic and with a user experience in step with the times and with digital needs.
  • Creation of direct channels of contact between the Placement office, teaching secretariats and teachers, in order to effectively and efficiently convey the existing professional opportunities that students often do not know about.

Psychological support service

The current period has emphasized the absolute importance of psychological support service for students. It should be adequately sponsored, and action should be taken to facilitate its access on a large scale.

To this end we ask for the allocation of more resources dedicated to this service in the next University budget.

LazioDiSCo

We aim to improve communication between University and LazioDiSCo (the regional body for the Right to Study) so that the criteria of the calls for proposals for the right to study reflect the needs and requirements of the students, both from an economic and social point of view and in terms of personal and professional development.

DIGITAL | + cutting edge, + interactive

The digitalization of services and processes is a fundamental prerogative for any company, both public and private, that pursues objectives of sustainability and innovation.

In this context, the proposals of UIF are the following.

  • Verify the state of the art of the University Wi-Fi connection and, if necessary, plan improvements. In recent years Tor Vergata has planned several interventions on the infrastructure network but they have not led to an effective improvement of the service.
  • Strengthen the Computing Center office to make data analysis activities systematic and to facilitate the work of the various administrative offices, currently blocked by various technical and bureaucratic constraints.
  • Implement, at a central level, an organic and systematic system of e-mail marketing that allows the various offices to take advantage of a shared and filtered database of all student data. This would greatly facilitate communication within the University between the institution and its students, particularly about the sharing of key information.
  • Makeover and reorganization of several faculty sites, which today are not up to the standards of a University of international importance such as ours. We also propose that student representatives be directly involved in the design of the user experience of the various sites, to better identify practical navigational needs.

SUSTAINABILITY AND RENOVATION | + innovation, + involvement of the territory

UIF argues that sustainability and urban, civil and social redevelopment are fundamental objectives that University should set daily in all its administrative, political and executive actions.

In support of this, as a student association, we will work on projects of sustainable mobility, reduction of plastic use and waste and redevelopment of the areas surrounding University.

Below are our election proposals.

  • Encourage the collaboration of University with the civic realities of the Roman and Lazio territory that for years have been moving effectively in terms of sustainability and redevelopment (Retake Roma, Romaltruista and others), in order to encourage recovery projects in the areas of Tor Vergata, Giardinetti, Tor Bella Monaca, Torre Spaccata and Torre Angela.
  • Eliminating the use of plastic from coffee machines and vending machines.
  • Limiting food waste from the LazioDisu cafeteria through an agreement with the startup Too Good To Go, which would allow students to purchase boxes of kitchen leftovers.
  • Creating an internal university bike-sharing service.Several universities are implementing shared and digitized systems of sustainable mobility; Tor Vergata, given its rather complicated logistical location, needs solutions that allow students who live in the surrounding areas to move independently.
  • Encourage the organization of cultural events, workshops and social redevelopment projects to improve the area of Tor Bella Monaca.

INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY | + sharing, + welcoming

A University increasingly immersed in an international context and with a massive presence of foreign students must constantly think about the integration of international communities that attend, animate and color it. There are still too many “challenges” that international students have to face once they arrive in the difficult territory of Tor Vergata.

Here are our proposals so that the international community can integrate with the existing one in a perspective of multicultural and ethnic contamination and mutual support.

  • Institution of courses in Italian language foreseen in the curriculum for international students.
  • Institutional organization of cultural initiatives to discover Rome, allowing students to get to know the city and have moments of comparison and knowledge with Italian students.
  • Establishment of a representative figure aimed at protecting international students from all forms of xenophobia and general discrimination.
  • Organization of thematic student clubs to facilitate dialogue and inclusion (e.g., thematic clubs on specific topics and clubs for fans).

PLACEMENT | + development, + connections, + experiences and opportunities

Take the course, study from the book, take the exam. Now repeat it until the day you graduate. If you think university life can be more than this, then you too will support our Association’s vision with us.

Studying is fundamental, but so are all those experiences during these years that allow us to get to know ourselves better, our aptitudes and abilities and what we really want to do. The key word of our century for the world of students, in an increasingly connected and information-rich world, is orientation. The University must do more to ensure that each student is better able to orientate himself or herself on his or her future and to make informed choices. To do this, it is necessary to significantly increase the number of all those experiences and opportunities for interaction with the professional, institutional, social and civil world. The University we dream of is the one in which, during your lunch break, you can meet and talk freely with a researcher, an entrepreneur, a manager, an international volunteer, or any other individual who can bring value to your path by sharing their experience.

Below are our proposals for the improvement of the University placement.

  • Systematically and periodically organize job orientation initiatives with major companies in all faculties.
  • Systematically organize workshops for all faculties aimed at improving their professional profiles (Linkedin and Curriculum Vitae) and offering ideas and advice to improve job search activities.
  • Significantly increase the frequency of Career Days and Career Faire, now organized in only two faculties of the University and only once a year. We must be aware that there are competing universities that organize activities of this kind even monthly.
  • Establish agreements with external partners who organize innovative initiatives such as hackathons, business games and challenges and encourage the integration of these initiatives within the teaching programs and individual courses.
  • Increase the number of agreements with business and trade associations to facilitate the matching of labor supply and demand.
  • Organize a pre-acceleration program for entrepreneurial projects aimed at students of all faculties. To date, all the main universities in Rome can boast of excellent entrepreneurship programs organized by major partners in innovation at the national level. Except for Tor Vergata.

UNIVERSITY LIFE | + shared, + welcoming

Tor Vergata is undoubtedly one of the universities with the greatest difficulties from a logistical point of view. Hence the great difficulty in involving the university community in extra-didactic initiatives.

Imagine an innovative environment in which to return to live the University, full of new and varied activities that can range from discovering the magic of Rome to participating in popular activities offered by student associations and the University; this is the university life we want for us and for all students.

Here are some of our proposals to improve the University experience and the student campus.

  • Establishment of a dedicated University office dedicated to the University campus and the promotion of all valuable activities and experiences. This office should have a close relationship of collaboration and cooperation with all student associations.
  • Systematic organization of cultural activities to discover Rome organized by the above office.
  • Institutional recognition and sponsorship of the activities of the University’s associations. Tor Vergata is one of the most backward universities in terms of support for student associations and the activities they organize, and as a result there is very little student interest in associations in all their facets.
  • Use of the many existing green spaces for the organization of recreational activities such as aperitifs, sporting events and musical and artistic events.
  • Bookcrossing open to all faculties.
  • Attribution of CFUs for sports merits obtained in all national and international activities in which the University takes part through the CUS.
  • Organization of annual sports competitions within University on the “Olympics” model. This format could also be replicated in collaboration with other universities in Rome and Lazio.

INFRASTRUCTURES and TRANSPORTATION | + services

As mentioned earlier, Tor Vergata is one of the universities with the greatest difficulties from a logistical point of view, considering its peripheral location with respect to the city center. However, an important news of last year could mark a big change; the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport gave the go-ahead to a funding of over 213 million euros for the new tramway of Rome “Termini – Giardinetti – Tor Vergata”. These are resources for rapid mass transport that will allow the procedure for the transformation of the railway line “Roma – Pantano” into a tramway line and the transfer of ownership from the Lazio Region to the City of Rome.

Uninformazione is committed to:

  • follow the progress of the above-mentioned project and to inform the student community about the progress of the works and other matters of public interest.

In addition, as part of the improvement of the public road system and related services we will propose:

  • the creation of at least one pedestrian crossing connecting the Giardinetti area with the Faculty of Engineering.
  • to establish agreements with COTRAL and ATAC for the sale of bus tickets inside the bars of the various faculties.

TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER | + connections, + investments

University scientific research represents an innovative driver for the development and growth of society. Our University aims to increase cooperation and interconnection with companies by encouraging the transfer of research results to industry and the territory (so-called technology transfer).

To enhance the value of research results we propose the following points.

  • The organization of an Expo of research that represents an important opportunity to create synergies and collaborations and to attract potential investment.
  • The mapping, through a special digital platform, of all research spin-offs and all patents filed by the University to facilitate matching with companies.

FURTHER PROPOSALS

In addition to the proposals listed above, here are some additional points not included in the areas of reference.

  • Propose the amendment of the University Statute with the aim of reintegrating the TAB (Technical Administrative and Library) component within the members of the Board of Directors, with the aim of effectively evaluating the common services offered to the student community.
  • To supervise in a capillary manner the allocation of PNRR resources that will arrive at our University, so that they go to strengthen research and common services.
  • Propose the integration of auxiliary indicators to those of ANVUR, for a more in-depth assessment of the quality of services and student welfare.
